What is Pilates?

The Pilates method was invented by Joseph Pilates (1883-1967), who originally referred to it as "Contrology." Today, it is widely known simply as Pilates, having been passed down from Joseph Pilates' disciples.

Pilates is often recognized as a form of exercise that helps alleviate stiff shoulders, prevent back pain, and improve posture. It is also a valuable method for core and inner muscle training, benefiting athletes and anyone looking to enhance their physical performance.

However, the appeal of Pilates extends beyond just physical exercise. The method has a significant impact on the mind, uplifting the spirit through movement. The goal is to achieve control of the body through the mind, and through repetition, cultivate a well-balanced physique. Ultimately, Pilates serves not only to train the body but also to integrate the body, mind, and spirit.

What is Mat Pilates?

Mat Pilates is a form of Pilates that is practiced on a yoga mat without any special equipment. It utilizes your own body weight to strengthen and balance your entire body, with an emphasis on the torso (core).

Although the movements may seem simple, focusing on proper breathing and posture allows you to engage the deeper layers of your body (the inner muscles). As a result, you can expect benefits that relate directly to daily life, such as improved posture, increased muscle strength, and enhanced flexibility.

Mat Pilates is also an opportunity to connect with your body, making it ideal for those looking to calm their minds or relieve stress.

YOGART PILATES : We return to the 6 Pilates Principles:

Concentration(集中)

  • Mindful awareness of each movement.

  • Quality over quantity — you move with full attention and precision.

Control(コントロール)

  • Every movement is deliberate.

  • You control your body — never letting momentum take over.

  • This builds true strength and coordination.

Centering(センタリング)

  • All movement begins from the “Powerhouse” — the core muscles around the abdomen, lower back, hips, and buttocks.

  • A strong center supports the entire body.

Precision(正確さ)

  • Every movement has purpose and alignment.

  • Small adjustments make a big difference.

Breath(呼吸)

  • Breathing energizes the body and connects movement with mind.

  • Inhale to prepare, exhale to activate your core and move with flow.

Flow(流れ)

  • Movements are smooth, continuous, and graceful.

  • Flow transforms exercise into mindful movement.

It’s not about beauty or perfection — it’s about finding freedom, ease, and confidence in a body that feels strong, supported, and aligned.
Through mindful movement and breath, we rediscover balance — from the inside out.
